Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)
What is PGP?:
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) is common affecting 1 in 5 pregnant women and describes pain arising from the symphysis pubis joint, sacro-iliac joints and / or lumbar spine. (The term Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction or SPD was previously used).
Pain can be experienced at the front or back of the pelvis, the lower back or abdomen and / or into the thighs. Women can experience a range of different symptoms, which can vary in intensity and how much their ability to walk and function is affected.
The sooner PGP is identified and assessed the better it can be managed. Most PGP resolves post delivery but a few women have ongoing problems after the birth of their baby.
