Pelvic Girdle Pain

Treating You Better

Pregnancy Pain

Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) is common affecting 1 in 5 pregnant women and describes pain arising from the symphysis pubis joint, sacro-iliac joints and / or lumbar spine. (The term Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction or SPD was previously used).

Pain can be experienced at the front or back of the pelvis, the lower back or abdomen and / or into the thighs. Women can experience a range of different symptoms, which can vary in intensity and how much their ability to walk and function is affected.

Management

Women with PGP need a qualified health professional to fully assess the pelvis and lumbar spine and give individual appropriate advice ante or postnatally. Assessment would include a full examination of your pelvis, spine and hip joints and the related muscle control and function.
